Water Reclamation Plants
As specialist process-engineering subconsultant to the project JV, WATEN provided lead process-engineering input for the feasibility and process design development of two water-reclamation plants for Rand Water and Midvaal Municipality.
WATEN applied expertise in water-reuse process selection, advanced treatment, design-basis development, influent and product-water quality assessment, hydraulic and process sizing, treatment-train development, sampling requirements and multidisciplinary design integration. The work addressed two distinctly different applications: reclamation of municipal wastewater effluent for industrial reuse at Meyerton and treatment of mine-affected water for potable-system blending at Glen Douglas.
Modular WTW Repurposing Concept
As part of an appointed Professional Services Provider team, WATEN developed the conceptual process design for repurposing the former Illovo sugar mill site and associated ash-dam infrastructure into a modular water treatment works and clear-water plant, planned for phased capacities of approximately 13, 27 and 40 ML/day.
The work applied process-engineering expertise in phased treatment-capacity development, process configuration, hydraulic assessment, infrastructure repurposing, site-footprint evaluation and integration with existing assets. The concept considered how legacy industrial infrastructure could be adapted to support future water-treatment requirements while allowing capacity to be expanded progressively as demand develops..
Wastewater Sludge Management & Beneficiation Plans
As subcontracted Professional Services Provider lead process engineer, WATEN led the development of sludge-management and beneficiation plans for three municipal wastewater treatment works serving Emfuleni Local Municipality.
The assignment applied specialist expertise in sludge-production assessment, mass balances, sludge routing, thickening and dewatering, anaerobic digestion, co-digestion, beneficiation and beneficial-use opportunities, together with assessment of existing operational constraints. The work translated these evaluations into practical sludge-management strategies and an operations and maintenance improvement roadmap for facilities with different capacities and treatment configurations.
Integrated Waste Management & Resource Recovery Facilities
As specialist process-engineering PSP subconsultant, WATEN supported the development of integrated waste-management facility concepts for three landfill catchments within the City of Johannesburg.
WATEN applied process-engineering and circular-economy expertise to the development and screening of waste-processing options, material recovery, source-separation interfaces, organics treatment and co-digestion, energy-recovery opportunities, waste-derived fuel, process-flow development and preliminary facility requirements. The work supported the evaluation of infrastructure configurations aimed at increasing resource recovery while reducing dependence on landfill disposal.
